Football Week 2: Big rally lifts T'hawks over Knights

GLASTONBURY - The Glastonbury football team scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter Friday night, including the game-winner with 47 seconds to go, to capture a 49-46 CCC Division I shoot out against Southington.

"I think we're two exceptional football teams," Southington coach Bill Mella said. "I think you're going to see a lot of us (this season)."

Tomahawks senior quarterback Sean McQuillan turned in a monster night. He rushed for five touchdowns, passed for another score and had a 34-yard interception return for a TD.

Southington quarterback Connor Butkiewicz also had another big week. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 457 yards and four touchdowns, although he did throw three interceptions.
The Blue Knights led 38-14 at halftime, with Butkiewicz tossing touchdowns to Anthony Florian (3 yards), Tyler Dube (5) and Zack Etter (51).

Dylan Danko, who was in the midst of a 221-yard night on 18 carries, rushed for a 2-yard score and Joe Pesch took an interception 56 yards to the end zone.

A pair of McQuillan TD rushes in the third quarter pulled Glastonbury within 38-28, but Dube snagged a 10-yard pass from Butkiewicz to make the score 46-28 in favor of Southington.

It was all Glastonbury in the fourth quarter, as McQuillan sandwiched a pick-six and a three-yard scoring run around a 37-yard touchdown bomb to Ryan McCarthy.

"We're going to wake up (today), watch film and practice," Mella said when asked how his team will respond to the loss. "It's a new week. We're not regrouping. We have to fix what needs to be fixed and build upon what needs to be fixed."

For Southington, Florian caught seven passes for 63 yards, while Dube (8-137) and Etter (7-146) also had big receiving nights.

Glastonbury, the defending Class LL state champion, improved to 2-0 with the victory. Southington evened its record at 1-1 overall.
