undefined— After surrendering 100 points in its first three games, Southington's defense needed to regroup against high-scoring New Britain. Otherwise, the Blue Knights would lose their third consecutive game.
That didn't happen Friday night at Rentschler Field. The Blue Knights' defense was sturdy in a 20-14 victory before an estimated 1,000 spectators.
"A lot of it came down us, the D, in our last two losses [against Glastonbury and Windsor]," defensive back Tim Sowa said. "It was great to come on this field and hold them."
New Britain (2-2), which had 66 total yards and no points in the first half, finished with 275 yards but only 14 points.
Dylan Danko's 113 rushing yards and two TDs and an aggressive, pursuit defense lifted the Blue Knights (2-2).
"That's what we've been working for," coach Bill Mella said. "That's what makes this special."
As for the Golden Hurricanes, 10 penalties for 89 yards hurt them. The worst occurred when cornerback Chris Linares made an interception at the goal line and returned it 83 yards to the Southington 17 midway through the second quarter. But the play was wiped out by a block in the back.
"Take 100 yards away and giving away yards like that, you're not going to win football games," Morrell said.
Southington opened the scoring with Danko's 6-yard run in the first quarter.
The Golden Hurricanes, who entered the game averaging 38.3 points, finally got a consistent drive going late in the quarter and moved to the Southington 18. But after making a catch, Tarik Hightower fumbled at the 18, where Southington's Dave Nichols recovered.
After a Sowa interception at the New Britain 20, Danko scored two plays later from the 5. Southington led 14-0 at halftime and increased its lead to 20-0 with 7:45 left in the third quarter on Joe Pesce's 45-interception return.
Tebucky Jones Jr. caught three passes for 51 yards on a sustained New Britain drive late in the third quarter. Rafal Garcarz faked a pass and ran up the middle for 15 yards and a TD to make the score 20-7.
Kaiuway Bioma's 69-yard scoring reception from Garcarz (14-28, 199 yards) brought New Britain to within 20-14 with 4:11 left.
New Britain's final drive ended with a fourth-and-9 pass that Sowa knocked down at the Southington 3 with 11 seconds to play.
"Our defense was great," Sowa said. "If we play like that we'll win a lot more games."
